Tomáš Zmeškal (1966) studied English and Literature in London where he lived in exile. His debut novel In 2008 Milostný dopis klínovým písmem (Love Letter in Cuneiform Script) was nothing less than a sensation. According to critics and readers he is a writer in the league of famous colleagues like Jáchym Topol and Bohumil Hrabal.
His second novel Životopis černobílého jehněte (Biography of a Black and White Lamb) from 2009 can be characterized as: Black Lives Matter behind the Iron Curtain.
In 2013 he published the long-awaited non-ficton novel Sokrates na rovníku (Socrates at the Equator) about the search of his father in the Congo.
Zmeškal has been honoured with the Josef Škvorecký Award and the EU Prize for Literature, and his work has been tarnslated in over a dozen languages.
